Theodore Major was born in humble circumstances in Wigan in 1908 and lived in nearby Appley Bridge until his death in 1999. He was against materialism and the sale of his pictures to rich collectors so kept around 3000 of his pictures back from sale as they were painted for ordinary people, not money. Theodore Major is now deemed to be one of the most important Northern artists of the Twentieth Century.
